REVEALED: CUTHBERT CROWNED NATION’S FAVOURITE ALDI PRODUCT

  • Over 420,000 shopper votes for Aldi ‘Fan Favourite’ items and famous cake comes out as best thing supermarket stocks
  • Aldi’s top 10 Fan Favourite products as voted by shoppers also revealed

He’s the delicious chocolate insect that spawned a host of imitators, skydived for charity from 40,000ft and even appeared in a High Court case – and now Aldi’s famous Cuthbert has been named by shoppers as the UK’s favourite all-time Aldi product.

The supermarket, which opened its first UK store in Birmingham in 1990, asked customers to vote for the items that have kept them returning to the aisles over the last 34 years. Spanning ten categories, including ‘Lunch’, ‘Fakeaway’, ‘Top Tipple’ and ‘Health & Beauty’ as well as ‘Social Media Star’, the Fan Favourite survey looked to settle the score on the nation’s favourite product, from Cuthbert to the Nutoka Hazelnut Chocolate Spread, and award-winning Veuve Monsigny Champagne.

And with over 420,000 casting votes, Cuthbert was the clear favourite, scoring more than 30% of overall votes in the Social Media Star category – the second most voted for product, Magnum Washing Up Liquid, scored 20% in the Cleaning category.

The chocolate treat was first stocked by Aldi in 2019 and fast became a firm party and teatime favourite – while a ‘battle of the caterpillar cakes’ with rival supermarkets resulted in a High Court case in 2021, meaning Cuthbert was temporarily unavailable from shelves.

He made a dramatic comeback in Aldi stores nationwide a few months later with a sky dive to raise money for Teenager Cancer Trust – and now his status as a true icon among British supermarket shoppers is secured.

Winning the nation’s hearts (and stomachs), shoppers will now be able to see Cuthbert, alongside the other category winners, highlighted as a ‘Fan Favourite’ in stores when doing their shopping.

The full list of winning Fan Favourite products include:

  • Sweet Treats and Snacks – Belmont Milk Chocolate Digestives
  • Lunch – Specially Selected New York Deli Pastrami & Emmental Cheese Sandwich
  • Dinner – Ready, Set Cook! Classic Fajita Dinner Kit
  • Fakeaway – Carlos Loaded Pepperoni Stuffed Crust Pizza

  • Health & Beauty – Hotel Collection Luxury Hand and Body Wash No.1 Lime, Basil & Mandarin

Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi UK, says: “There’s never been anything like Cuthbert in Britain’s supermarkets. Well, maybe there’s been a few similarities elsewhere, but we’re rightly proud of our
iconic cake, and so it seems are our shoppers.

“It’s been fantastic and fascinating to see what gets the seal of shopper approval across such a wide range of products. With our newly crowned winners set to be highlighted in store, we hope customers will find it easier
than ever to find their favourite product.”

Aldi’s winning Fan Favourite products will be highlighted in stores from today with an exclusive Fan Favourite logo.

ALDI LAUNCHES SPARKLING TWIST ON TRENDING PORTUGUESE ‘GREEN WINE’

29 January, 2025
  • Aldi’s new Mimo Moutinho Vinho Verde is available in stores now for just £6.99
  • The new sparkler has had the seal of approval from Mistress of Wine, Sam Caporn, who described it as “the perfect hybrid between a fruity wine and a fizz”
  • The supermarket has also brought back its popular Ribolla Gialla, available in stores now

Is this the orange wine of 2025? Drinks Retailer of the Year[1], Aldi, is adding a touch of sparkle to the growing ‘green wine’ trend with its new sparkling Mimo Moutinho Vinho Verde (£6.99, 75cl), available in stores now.

The term "green wine" refers not only to the wine's youthful, fruity character but also to the landscape of the Minho region in northeastern Portugal, where it originates. The cooler climate contributes to the wine's elegance and zestiness, and its blend of indigenous Portuguese white grape varieties results in a complex and delightful flavour profile.

Aldi’s new refreshing take on Portugal's beloved wine offers the best of both worlds. Given the green light from Mistress of Wine, Sam Caporn, she describes it as “the perfect hybrid between a fruity wine and a fizz, with notes of apricot, peach, nectarine, and mango” - ideal for those seeking a lighter alternative to traditional sparkling wines – think zesty lime and crisp green apple.

In fact, Sam suggests it delivers more flavour than Prosecco, with a softer effervescence: “Offering fresh flavours similar to that of Prosecco but more so, it offers a unique and exciting twist on a beloved Portuguese classic. Perfect if you are feeling a bit fizzed out after the festive season but still crave something refreshing and flavourful.”

Shoppers will also be delighted to hear that Aldi is bringing back its popular Specially Selected Sparkling Ribolla Gialla (£6.99, 75cl),available in stores now.Described as “sipping on sunshine” by Sam Caporn, it is the perfect gem to toast to warmer days ahead.

The Mimo Moutinho Vinho Verde and the Specially Selected Sparkling Ribolla Gialla are available in stores now.
