FULL-PRICE SUPERMARKETS ARE 17% MORE EXPENSIVE THAN ALDI, NEW STUDY FINDS

Study on a basket of 33 supermarket items reveals latest price gap between Aldi and its competitors.

Aldi has been named the UK’s cheapest supermarket by leading industry trade magazine, The Grocer.

The study on a basket of 33 everyday items* revealed the four largest full-price supermarkets – Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda and Morrisons – were on average 17% more expensive than Aldi.

The basket of 33 items at Aldi cost a total of £45.13, according to The Grocer. The same basket of goods was £54.78 at Morrisons, £53.65 at Sainsbury’s, £51.63 at Asda and £51.61 at Tesco.

Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi, said: “The numbers show what our customers already know – the only place to get Aldi prices on every product, every time you shop, is Aldi.

“Other supermarkets can try to compete with us through selective price matches and loyalty schemes. But when it comes to the price of a weekly grocery shop, these schemes rarely add up to real savings.”

Aldi is the fourth-largest supermarket in the UK and around one in every ten pounds spent on groceries goes through its tills.

Consumer champion Which? has also named Aldi as the UK’s cheapest supermarket for each of the past three years, and for every month so far in 2024.
