Wednesday 27th January: Aldi today announces it has stepped in to help 13 British breweries – including Derby Brewing, Dartmoor Brewery, Harbour Brewing and St Peters – by stocking beers that they usually sell direct to pubs.
Helping to quench the thirst of pub-loving punters, Aldi is putting 13 extra beers on its shelves, all sourced from UK breweries, in a bid to save over 25,000 gallons of precious craft beers and traditional brews from going to waste due to pub closures.
From golden ales and traditional amber beers, to IPAs and bitters, the beers go on sale from 28th January and are set to whet the appetite of beer lovers up and down the country.
Derby Brewing, based close to Derby city centre, is one of the breweries Aldi is supporting. Aldi will be stocking its multi award-winning and aptly named ‘Business as Usual’ beer, which is a popular malty and traditional amber brew.
Paul Harris, Managing Director at Derby Brewing, comments: “It’s been a really difficult year for us. As brewers, we take pride in our beer and our craft. It would have been terrible to see it go to waste so it’s a massive boost for us that Aldi is taking on our excess stock and supplying our award-winning beer to punters across the UK. It is great to see Aldi supporting local producers in this way.”
Dartmoor Brewery’s Jail Ale is another beer bottle to hit Aldi shelves on 28th January and is a full-bodied, deep golden brown beer. The brewery is thrilled to be able to make use of its surplus stock and Ian Cobham, Managing Director comments: “This past year has been very challenging with 90% of our normal trade being wiped out due to the pub closures. The stop/start nature of the lockdowns has meant we have had to destroy 40,000 litres of beer and counting. Backing from Aldi is not only helping us reach a larger audience but has helped us survive and we’re absolutely delighted to showcase our flagship beer, Jail Ale, in its stores.”
Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi UK, says: “Lots of our favourite local breweries have been hugely affected by the pandemic. As part of our commitment to supporting British suppliers, we’ve found a way to stock great quality and award-winning beers, and also help breweries who are suffering during this time.”
