A new study from Aldi has found that English wine is now rated more highly than bottles from Spain, Australia and New Zealand.
The survey of 2,000 wine lovers found that, after bursting onto the scene in recent years, we now think our wine is among the greatest in the world. Taking the reins from some of our larger counterparts, the survey revealed shoppers think our vineyards are better at producing wines than the likes of South Africa (4%), New Zealand (8%), Spain (6%), Argentina (2%), and Chile (4%). Ranking third (15%), the only two nations rated higher than the UK were France (20%) and Italy (17%).
Though Champagne (40%) reigns supreme when it comes to having a celebratory drink, 15%
think ‘English sparkling is the new Champagne’.
Sam Caporn, Mistress of Wine, said: “Initially known for producing amazing bottles of sparkling, English still wine is gaining popularity – as shown by this research. Shoppers are experiencing the delicious still wines that can be grown in England, which are now standing out against larger wine-making regions. With delicious grapes including Pinot Noir and Bacchus, which can be likened to a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, it is great to see them increasingly being awarded the recognition they deserve.
“English Wine Week provides a fantastic opportunity to become acquainted with our first-class wines which are regularly stunning wine lovers around the world. From white and fizz, to rosé and red, there really is a bottle to suit any meal or occasion.”
After seeing an incredible 60% surge in sales of its award-winning English wine range in the last year, Aldi’s vinos showcase the very best wine-growing hotspots across the UK.
